Maci Wisdom, a Peaster, Texas native, began her college career at Texas Tech University in the Fall of 2020 to pursue a degree in Animal Science with a concentration in pre-med. To get the most out of her college career, Maci joined several organizations at Texas Tech to gain valuable experience to enhance her college experience and make connections with her peers.
Right after classes started in the fall, Maci’s mother, Michelle, was diagnosed with stage four terminal cancer. Maci immediately put her activities on the back burner to focus on her family and do everything she could to be there for them in a time of need. She would drive home to Peaster every weekend to spend as much time as possible with her family.
“My last class was on Thursday, and I would drive home to be with my family and then drive back for my first class on Tuesday,” Wisdom said.
In 2021, during Christmas break, Maci’s mother’s health rapidly declined. Wisdom stayed at home during the break and returned to school for the spring semester.
To support her family in a time of need, Wisdom withdrew from Texas Tech in February 2022 to be able to be at home with her mother. Her mother unfortunately passed away shortly after.
Wisdom is planning to return to Texas Tech during the summer part-time, and then return to being a full-time student in the fall semester of this year.
“Maci is a cut above the rest,” said her boss, Kayla Rathmann. “She is disciplined, works hard, and is very smart.”
Wisdom’s plan after graduating with her bachelor’s degree is to apply to Physician’s Assistant school. She hopes to pursue a career in the medical field as a physician’s assistant specializing in pediatric oncology after completing her education at Texas Tech.
