As the largest department in the Davis College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, the Department of Animal and Food Sciences have had to adjust degree program strategies, and identify the missing pieces for students wanting to pursue a career in veterinary medicine.

Having an open mind allowed many doors to open for Kullen Sorrels. Now wrapping up his third year of vet school, he reflects on the positive influence the AFS has had on him.
Conner Chambers recalled the day their local veterinarian came out to the ranch to check the cattle. He motioned Chambers over to show him how he was completing the pregnancy check on their cow. Grinning ear to ear with excitement, it was at that moment he knew he wanted to spend the rest of his life working with animals.
In true West Texas fashion, Texas Tech University and its surrounding communities came together, overcame tremendous obstacles, and, against all odds, finally got the veterinary school they had waited so long for.
